What are electives and societies?

Electives and Societies are a valued part of academic and cultural life at Oundle. They give pupils the chance to explore ideas and interests beyond the examined curriculum — simply for the joy of learning.

Many are led by teachers who bring their own passions and expertise, from philosophy to photography, dissection to dance. Several are also run by senior pupils, offering leadership opportunities and peer-led learning. Pupils might deepen an existing interest or try something entirely new — from creative writing and debating to bridge, shooting or jazz appreciation.

Each academic department also runs its own Society, often at both junior and senior levels. These host guest speakers, lead discussions and create space for pupils to extend their thinking in a sociable, relaxed setting. Most Society meetings take place in the evenings and are open to anyone with curiosity and a willingness to join in.

Above all, Electives and Societies reflect the spirit of Oundle: stretching the mind, expanding horizons and encouraging pupils to pursue learning as something to be enjoyed, not just assessed.
