What is Oundle's policy on mobile phones?

We take a thoughtful and long-standing approach to mobile phone use, aiming to reduce dependency, encourage face-to-face interaction and support healthy digital habits — all while ensuring pupils can stay connected to home.

Our policy is shaped by three core principles:

  • Supporting effective communication between pupils and parents

  • Promoting online safety and protecting against misuse or bullying

  • Encouraging positive online behaviour and digital wellbeing

From First to Fourth Form, smartphones are not allowed. Instead, boarders use simple “brick” phones for essential calls and messages, and these are handed in at set times. In the Fifth Form, pupils may use smartphones but must leave them in their House during lessons; boarders also hand them in overnight. Sixth Formers may keep smartphones with them, but not use them during lessons or in public spaces around School.

We ensure that every pupil can stay in touch with home — including through supervised video calls for those without smartphones. While views on mobile phone use will always vary, we’ve found this approach leads to:

  • Better sleep and focus

  • Healthier relationships with social media

  • Less time spent gaming

  • More in-person interaction

  • Reduced risk of online bullying

We believe these boundaries help pupils build healthier digital habits — and contribute to a more connected, balanced school community.
